Review of Happy Valley (2008) by Michelle A — 06 Mar 2010
This is about the "far more than the National Average" prescription drug abuse problem that Utah has. In a place so heavily steeped in religion and tradition and the happy faces, why is this? This has an excellent soundtrack as well as several poignant moments; HOWEVER, the downfall of the film is this: to show what IS, but not WHY left me disappointed.
Statistics will show & prove the IS, but the good documentary maker must also show that they are exploring for us all the reasons WHY. I saw very little of that here. What was shown was the denial many still have there, even in a few of the parents who lost children, their denial was evident.
This was an intersting topic, I just felt it wasn't explored well enough.
