Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Rikard I — 03 May 2009
I won't lie - the first 20 minutes or so of this movie irritated me. Hearing Poppy and her friends wailing at each other wasn't pleasant. However, as it moves on, the movie actually becomes quite good.
It succeeds because of two main reasons: 1) Sally Hawkins is effective in her role, whether you like it or not, and Eddie Marsan is fantastic as the driving instructor; 2) the film does a great job of showing that Poppy is a truly nice person, and not just a giddy fool.
