Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Peter L — 06 May 2009
This was one of my absolute favorite movies this year. And without a doubt one of the most joyous/entertaining. I think a common missconception about this movie will be that it is a really happy woman living a really happy life.
But honestly, she is a really happy woman living life, and trying her hardest to remain happy inspite of everything that goes on a round her. her sisters fight, she isn't rich, she doesn't know how to drive, she doesn't have a boyfriend, her bike gets stollen, and through it all she soldiers on smiling enormously the whole time.
She is pretty much my hero, because she doesn't judge others, and she doesn't care about other people judging her, and she really doesn't even judge herself. she copes with life, she has a few drinks, and she treats everyone with enormous kindness, and laughs at her own missofrtune.
I love her. This film was also visually stunning, with some really brilliant shots, and a pretty grounded screenplay that took it's characters seriously, then allowed them to run wild. The acting was all brilliant, with Sally Hawkins delivering my favorite lead-female performance this year, and some really great direction from the all-too brillioant film maker Mike Leigh.
I Love this movie. so Much.
