Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Sean C — 27 May 2009
A lot of the discussion of this movie seemed to follow the premise that it's a breezy comedy, as it was marketed. No surprise that so many people have hated it, unfairly. Poppy is not a wacky sitcom neighbor.
She's a fully-fleshed example of the type of person (and surely you've had to work with one) who's intensely, perversely chipper and optimistic. What happens when she meets her opposite in someone equally unwilling to meet others halfway? It's not pretty.
Two complaints: the scene with the homeless guy seems jarringly more like a dream sequence than reality, and an abused child is used as a throwaway plot device, which isn't cool.
