Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Paula M — 05 Oct 2009
To the casual outsider, this may look like a small movie with a simple premise. Upon viewing, I saw lots of depth and reflected on our perception of people like Poppy. It's easy for us to dismiss an optimist's point of view as childish or ignorant, but this allowed me insight I wouldn't have gotten from casual observation.
Poppy isn't an optimist to annoy us or because she likes to play pretend. She's an optimist because she believes it the right way to react to adverse situations. Someone stole your bike? Oh well.
Maybe they needed it more than you, so move on and enjoy your walk home. What's more interesting are the specific relationships forged in this movie and how personalities clash or not, especially the relationship between Poppy and Scott, her polar opposite driving instructor.
A worthwhile watch.
