Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Caque A — 16 Nov 2009
Mike Leigh is a bit of a British Institution. As Directors go, he is well known and respected for his kitchen sink dramas and his harsh, reality based characters. His last film, 'Vera Drake' was a great example of his talent and power.
Yet despite his previous work and the fact that this film has garnered critical attention and praise, it left me feeling rather blah. The DVD box review says, "It's more than a movie, it's a gift.
" Perhaps this is true, I must have missed the offering. Really, this film should be called, 'Happy-Go-Nothing' because absolutely nothing happens, no drama, intrigue or sex, no real laughs, no conflict or anything to get excited about.
It's just a simple, sweet story of a woman who giggles and stumbles through life with her merry band of girlfriends. I've given lesser films/Directors better ratings because the films were at least somewhat entertaining.
The film looked nice and wasn't offensive but it offered me nothing as a viewer. Maybe it's a girl thang, but I doubt it. After all, I liked the Sex and The City movie.
