Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Glenn T — 31 Jan 2010

Given its reviews maybe I watched with unrealistic expectation but this film is frightfully dull. It's not exactly bad, in terms of performance and dialogue and craft, it's just that nothing happens.

The whole movie is based upon buying into Poppy as this ever-joyful, to the point of annoyance, charmingly free spirit, and while Hawkins plays her to maddening perfection, she's nowhere near interesting or likable enough to carry a film where an hour into the "story" absolutely nothing happens! There are some funny scenes but mostly its just Poppy being cheerful and unaffected by the world and nothing more.

This is, essentially, a non-movie. Granted, I didn't finish it, but after an hour of nothing happening, which couldn't hold my attention for more than twenty minutes at a time, I became too bored to continue.
