Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Elliott F — 02 Oct 2010
What a wonderful movie! Happy Go Lucky is a sweet, cheerful movie that tell us the story of a 30 years old primary teacher, name Poppy. First thing first, Poppy is a great character, she is tad weird or eccentric some may say but on the other hand she is a cheerful person that try to make everyone around her happy, like she said at the end of the movie.. when her best friend asked her to try not to make everyone happy, and Poppy replied 'There's no harm in trying that Zoe, is there?'.
I just don't get how people missed out the point, its a feel-good movie. We watch Poppy's life chapter within chapter, she doesn't have a fantastic life or a cool job, but she accept as it is and enjoy what she does. She is pushing thirty, and when she was dissed by her younger pregnant sister about marriage, she tell her she will get married and have children when the time comes. Poppy's mind works a bit like me, I'm in no mean a 'happy go lucky' kind of guy, but I take everything in life as they come, you can't rush things and that's one of the reason I enjoyed this flick.
Sally Hawkins is Poppy, great great acting by her! I also love, Eddie Marsan as Scott; Poppy's angry driving instructor. Though the end of their relationship could be portrayed in a better way, but he pulled off a great role as an angry man, that has a bad past and try to escape it.
I don't find the movie annoying or exaggerated a tiny bit, the movie deals with simplicity. so if you like simple storyline movie, this is for ya!
8/10.
