Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Michael L — 01 Jan 2012
A small little gem of a film. Very hard to categorize (comedy? drama?) as anything other than a character study of the bubbly Poppy (the winning Sally Hawkins). Since there is no plot to speak of, her character is left room to breathe as we see her at work (primary school teacher), at play (FLAMENCO!), at home (with her beloved long-time roommate) and at her driving lessons (with an increasingly agitated instructor).
She lauhgs, she smiles, she flirts, she talks... a lot - wearing colorful outfits and ever-present "sexy boots" all the while. Much of what she spouts is gibberish and I kept waiting for myself to turn on her and get annoyed.
Instead, by the end of the film you fall in love with her and are sad that this window into her life is closing.
