Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Peter B — 29 Dec 2012
I loved this. Hence the upcoming waffle. Poppy....where to start? How about first impressions. At first she annoyed me. I found her happy all the time laugh got on me nerves. And then as the minutes passed effirtlessly and smoothly by.
...i began to like her more and more, then by the end of the film I loved her to bits. This is on the outside an easy performance....but its not its deeper than that. At first the cynical side thinks she must be drunk or sumthin.
..laughin non stop, etc. Its only as the film progresses that you realise its a choice she has made. She sees what anger can do and chooses to try and be happy. Thats what this great gem of a tale does.
..it makes you think about what happy means. To an extent poppy takes certain aspects tooo far, and yeah without doubt its healthy to get angry or at least let it out so it doesnt build up into a rage like the driving instructor.
Poppy as a character is taken to the extreme to make the film work, its a film - a comedy for the most part - so obviously in real life poppy would be less extreme. She is portrayed this way to make the point about how happiness can be infectious.
...if we make ourselves happy then it can be inspiring. Poppy isnt an idiot, she is a happy person and doesnt see the point in getting hung up on the silly things that dont matter. Life is too short. Brilyantly counterbalancing this is eddie marsans anger filled character.
The answer to happiness lies somewhere between poppys over the top chirpiness and eddie marsans heart attack waitin to happen anger. Its a choice and poppy is an inspirational character who-love or hate her-makes you think about just how easy it can be to lift someones mood.
She sure lifted mine. Brilyant film. Really surprisingly life affirming and uplifting. See it and hopefully it will make you do this :-) !!!
