Review of Happy Feet Two (2011) by Ayu M — 18 Jun 2012
This is the sequel that never should have happened. The original was lame, but it made a boatload of money whilst trying to indoctrinate kids. This flick doesn't go exactly the same route, but it is nonetheless incongruous.
It's just another talking animal flick, which never materializes into something substantive. There are little social commentary messages thrown in (the krill's same sex tendencies are the most blatant), but any subtle messages are drowned out by the plot that is devoid of a point.
Sure, some of the vocal talent is admirable, but even Elijah Wood (Bobby), Pink (Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle), Brad Pitt (Moneyball), Matt Damon (We Bought a Zoo), and Sofia Vergara can't raise this sinking ship to a mediocre level.
There are a couple musical moments with Robin Williams (August Rush) and Hank Azaria (Hop) that almost pass muster, but they can't save the rest of the flick. Oh, and the animation/live action hybrid was just too weird.
Like its predecessor, this is one to skip.
