Review of Happy Feet (2006) by Jim A — 25 Nov 2011
I was twelve when this came out in theaters after seeing some great teasers and trailers and I've waited for the DVD release of this film. When my grandmother bought it for me the following months, however, I had pretty low expectations. So, I put the DVD in a player, thinking that this would be an OK film.
Man was I wrong.
Never, and I mean, never have I been blown away by this movie's sheer brilliance. After hearing some catchy tunes throughout the entire film, I had a romping good time! The story about a tap-dancing penguin named Mumble who is never appreciated by anyone because of his lack of singing and sets off an adventure to stop the humans from stealing the fish while learning that if you just be yourself, you can make the difference in the world is unbelievably touching if would bring you tears while packed with hilarious and clever dialogue bring them some laughs.
The computer animation is amazing. It has a perfect blend of motion-capture and live-action with beautiful visuals including the look of the Antarctica. The character animation was amazing with talented voice actors like Elijah Wood, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Brittany Murphy, Hugo Weaving, and Robin Williams to make them cute and likable.
The music from John Powell (tunes included) were surprisingly good, well-executed, and memorable to listen to.
Happy Feet would be recommended to fans of the animation industry as one of the greatest computer animated features ever made. Now that a sequel just came out, it is unknown whether I would like it or not, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
***** out of 5.
