Review of Happy Endings (2014) by Steve M — 17 Jun 2009
Why do I see myself in the character played by Tom Arnold, the father of a gay son whose virginity was taken (the gay son's virginity was taken, not the fathers..duh!) by a woman with whom he (the father, not the son) falls in love, gets engaged to, unknowingly impregnates and then disengages from the woman who slept with his son but clearly loves him (the father) and then gives a car, a cell phone and various other things to a different woman who is using him only for his money and he doesn't seem to mind?
Whew!
The film is presented as if it were a documentary of a documentary, with subtitles that appear randomly and on half the screen that translate the back story of the scene. The technique seemed rather weird and annoying at first, but as someone who--due to pure innocence and naivete, of course--often "doesn't get it" I came to appreciate the insight and explanation on the right half of the screen. It's kind of like having my Granny on hand when I was 8 years old to explain the Sunday comics.
This film won't change your life, but it was a fun 2 hours laying in bed alone. Better than counting sheep. And better than some other number of hours I've spent in bed when I wasn't alone.
PS--I lost my virginity the same way. No, my dad wasn't involved before, during or after. But it was a woman. What's up with that?
