Review of Happy Death Day (2017) by Stephen G — 13 Oct 2017
Happy Death Day continues Blumhouse's (Split, Sinister, Get Out, The Gift, Whiplash, and the godawful Paranormal Activity films) trend of interesting twists on the horror of humanity. While it won't benefit from the social race commentary that gave Get Out such a huge media push, it is just as tightly executed.
It's not quite a slasher or typical horror film where they continue to push the gore aspect- in fact, the lack of blood and gore render it as less of a horror film and more of a suspense thriller.
If Blumhouse continues this trend toward interesting takes on the "horror" genre, it will have made the atrocious Paranormal Activity series, which gave Jason Blum enough money to fund a lifetime of films) worth it.
