Review of Happy Death Day (2017) by Adi G — 14 Oct 2017
Happy Death Day review!
Happy death-day the story about a girl in college named Tree. She is essentially you're very basic College frat girl student think someone straight out of Mean Girls. She's mean and really doesn't care about anyone else but herself. One night she gets ready to go to a party and gets murdered by a killer in a baby face mask. But after she dies she wakes up realizing that things seem a little too familiar. It's pretty much Groundhog's Day meets a slasher flick. she dies and has to repeat the same day over and over again until she finds who the killer is.
Pros.
Very Darkly funny, seeing all the different ways she gets killed is very entertaining and sometimes quite funny.
The movie is very fast-paced and entertaining there's never a dull moment.
The actress in the film that plays Tree does a really good job. Her character really develops over time into somebody that you actually care about.
Takes a familiar formula that we've seen in multiple movies like Groundhog's Day and Edge of Tomorrow and turns it into a slasher flick giving it a kind of unique twist on that formula.
The movie has some decent attempts at heart. Although it's not the best type of that stuff it is nice to see that in this movie that I really didn't expect to have anything like that.
it's also very tongue-in-cheek and doesn't take itself seriously.
Cons.
The movie is way too reliant on jump-scares mostly in the first half. I understand why they would do that. It is that type of movie and it is marketed as a horror movie I didn't find scary at all.
All the side characters are very one note and generic.
The movie put way too many red herrings trying to make you believe who's the Killer and who's not the Killer. that all lead up to a twist that I didn't find remotely shocking or interesting.
Sometime it gets a little too corny for its own good. There are times where it works but then there are times where it comes off to cringey.
Overall Happy Death Day is a surprisingly enjoyable movie that I actually had quite a bit of fun with. I honestly didn't have any expectations at all for this movie and ended up being pleasantly surprised. I would not consider this a horror movie it does have jump scares but there's nothing scary in it. It's definitely more fun than it is scary.
