Review of Happy Death Day (2017) by Jacob M — 21 Oct 2017
Happy Death Day - Review (2017).
The Good.
Jessica Rothe's Charming Performance - Even though her character at first is a Stuckup bitch and a whore, eventually she grows on you. This movie does not work with out her if she wasn't in it it would probably suck.
The Mystery Is Genuinely Compelling.
Goofy & Satirical.
There's A Great Montage Sequence (would of been better IIT was R Rated).
Again, no spoilers here, but the film does have a few aces up its sleeve, especially later on, in terms of leading audiences down a certain path and then smartly pulling the rug out from under them.
For a while it seems like the film has under-estimated audiences and seems set to deliver a lackluster conclusion, but writer Scott Lobdell throws in some curve-balls sure to keep viewers on their toes until the credits finally roll.
The Bad.
The Huge Negative that its not a Horror Film its a straight up Comedy, often the killer plot is put to the wayside and the movie feels like a straight-up college-set comedy, and it likely doesn't help that the PG-13 rating further strips away most of the tension and potential terror.
The PG-13 Rating hurts it a lot, an R rating would've been so beneficial to a film like this, allowing for Tree's various death scenes to be comically over-the-top, while the satirical sorority girl chatter would sound much more authentic with a cruder tongue. This is more for lame teens than Adults.
It's Basically Groundhog Day For Dummies - Whenever a new wrinkle is introduced to the plot, Tree or another character will literally verbalise it to make sure everyone in the audience is keeping up, even if there's nobody else in the room.
The 2 Pointless Subplots - The first is a melodramatic attempt to inject some emotion into the film, with Tree mourning the death of her mother three years prior, but it ultimately has little bearing on the overall narrative and basically feels like a lame soap opera excess.
The other subplot can't really be talked about due to spoilers, but you'll know it when you see it, because it comes totally out of left-field and takes the film on a needless tangent for about 10 minutes.
50 Cent's "In Da Club" Isn't In The Final Movie instead its some shitty generic song.
The Ultimate Reveal is pretty predictable and the motives area pretty retarded.
Overall: This is OK not horror film that really doesn't need a 2nd viewing and somehow ere getting a sequel idk why??
Overall Grade: C+.
