Review of Happy Death Day (2017) by Paul R — 28 Dec 2017
I'm not a huge slasher movie fan, but I absolutely LOVE time loop stories, so I saw Happy Death Day today. I had a really fun time with it, it's kind of a dark comedy instead of a real horror movie.
Kind of plays with horror tropes at times, although it succumbs to them as well at others. The main actress, Jessica Rothe, is fantastic; she carries this movie 100%, plays a huge range of emotions and reactions really well, and keeps the movie really fun even when terrible things are happening to her character.
I liked her character's progression too, she's really unpleasant at the start but grows a lot as a result of her ordeal. Only weakness for me is that it's a "whodunit" slasher movie where I pegged the final reveal almost immediately.
There's some smaller detail reveals I thought were pretty clever though, and again, just a lot of fun to watch. Highly recommend if you're looking for a fun October movie, or if you ever wanted to see Groundhog Day as a slasher flick!
