Review of Happy Death Day (2017) by Johnathon W — 18 Sep 2018
Solid slasher film thanks to a breakout lead performance and an innovative use of the 'Groundhog Day' formula. Jessica Rothe is superb as Tree, playing her as a not very good person who you nevertheless grow to like.
Rothe displays a great mix of humor, pathos and even unlikablity, as you originally hate her so much you like seeing her get killed. However, as the film progresses, she does grow on you, as does her character.
Behind the camera, director Christopher Landon keeps the action moving smoothly while exploring nearly every angle with the premise. Granted, there are a few plot holes (why doesn't Tree just try getting the killer's mask off at least once) but overall, a fun new slasher great for any scary movie fan.
