Review of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013) by Thomas E — 17 Aug 2013
Funny and thrilling take on a fairy tale. H&G is no masterpiece by any means, but it features two main characters that have been cast very well. The script could have been better, but the movie suffers most from sloppy, unimaginative direction.
Mirkola manages to take the punch out of a whole series of interesting scenes and plot twists. An opportunity was missed here. Gemma Arterton is deliciously sexy and has a strong screen presence. We'll see more good things from her in the future.
Renner is well cast, although he stands in Artertons shadow. It's not his fault though that the movie does not live up to its potential. If you like splatter or if you're a fan of any of the leads, I can recommend H&G, although I would advise not to pay too much for seeing it.
