Review of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013) by Otto T — 25 Jan 2016

So after Dead Snow, Tommy Wirokla made and wrote the next film Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters which is his first American film, and the worst reviewed in his career so far. I actually tried to avoid it like the plague a long time ago because I was one of those people that if a movie had negative reviews, then I'm not watching it.

What got me into watching it was my mom who thought that it's an enjoyable film. My mom and I mostly have the same taste in films, so I got to watch it, and it actually is a great film. Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton are terrific in this and have great chemistry together as brother and sister.

The fight scenes are great, and it shows that the main heroes are vulnerable. The effects look really nice, and the designs of the witches look really cool and creative, although the the gore effects were really terrible.

The plot is really good and I'm glad that there was more to the story then the trailers showed, but there are some moments that I find really predictable which made me question a little but on one of the character's logic of thinking.

I don't really know much of the villain's backstory except of why they are doing it which is disappointing consider that in Dead Snow, one of the characters had a scene, very long though, of giving a backstory of the Nazi zombies.

Some of the characters felt stock to me, and the humor here and there felt a bit flat, although the humor is mostly funny, for what little they done for it that. I don't understand why Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters got mostly negative reviews, I thought it's an enjoyable flick that was just having fun as its own film.
