Review of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013) by John Eric D — 28 May 2015
From the beginning, this movie is nothing more than a dumb fantasy made for people of extremely simple minds and tastes, and it shows all throughout. But it's worse than that. Not only is it a bastardizing of an old fairy tale, completely re-writing the story to suit a trite fantasy, it's also a defiant celebration of medievalism at its worst.
I feel those who defend this movie as pure escapism are either lying to others and themselves through their teeth or are just too stupid to live. There is no hope of suspension of disbelief here. It's also really sad that, for all the rest of this movie's faults including the writing, narrative, and impotent action scenes, this movie had an opportunity to at least create a strong female lead, but they squandered it by making for just as vulnerable as conventional movie writing dictates.
