The book was not that good. This might be a case where the movie is actually better than the book which isn't easy to do in my opinion.
It's hard for me to get into Julianne Moore as Clarice, but it's better than no movie at all. I can't get enough of Hannibal which may explain my bias towards the series. It's a little too light at times which may explain some of the negative reviews. For the record I tend to agree.
