Review of Hannibal (2001) by Alex B — 02 Mar 2010
Anthony Hopkins is my hero! One of the best acted films ever. Some say Starling and Lecter's character interaction is not nearly as good as Silence of The Lambs and that is why they dislike this movie.
But what I got from this movie is, according to the title, it is more directed towards the character Hannibal Lecter and not so much thier relationship, which I do agree has a very large role in the movie.
I found myself more interested in the man who has been in hiding and staying "clean," if you will, of his habbits. And when his freedom is in jeopardy, he has to come back out from hiding and deal with this new threat.
And Gary Oldman absolutley knocks it out of the park as the twisted Mason Verger out for revenge for Lecters feet, and the rest of him... But the subtlety of everyone who acts in this film is amazing.
Multiple viewings would help. Overall it is a very dark and complex story. Though it may not be as good as Silence Of The Lambs, Ridley Scott does an amazing portrait of one of the most talked about "villains", if it does ya well, in cinema history.
