Review of Hannibal (2001) by Evan K — 24 Dec 2011
My personal favorite of the series. Although persecuted for being a bad sequel, I believe it actually was a very strong follow up to Silence of the Lambs. Yes, it was different. The story focussed directly on Hannibal Lecter and his events years after escaping.
Anthony Hopkins brings back the same impressive performance for his signature character that he did back in Lambs. Gary Oldman as Mason Verger was an outstanding performance as well. He embodies a monster in both terms of physical repulsiveness as well as inner ugliness.
An astonishing make-up job on his character was done too. Some of the previous events of his character could have been expanded upon though, which would have revealed to us how despicable of a monster he truly was before his physical transformation.
The movie isn't exactly perfect, but it is still well done and truly scary in its own sense.
