Review of Hannibal (2001) by Mark N — 08 Apr 2012
Possibly the most outstanding thing about Hannibal is Julianne Moore.
Taking on the seemingly impossible shoes of a Foster's Clarice Starling, which she does extremely well. Without that element the film might have fallen into awful parody. Scott's deft touch with the material is the other aspect the film gets right and again without that pedigree I shudder at the possible outcome. Unfortunately the plot is dull and too dry for an unleashed Lecter to really get many memorable scenes or quotes out of. The show is somewhat stolen by the crippled Oldman as Mason Verger in one of the most horrific pieces of makeup in a horror film for decades. Any follow up to Silence was bound to be a lesser affair but far from the loss it could have been.
