Review of Hannibal (2001) by Jocelyn J — 24 Sep 2012
Bold and daring film making by Scott. Hannibal is a completely different film in the context of the series. Scott proves that you don't have to follow the same formula of your predecessor (much like Red Dragon, Manhunter, etc.
) to make an incredibly entertaining and thought provoking thriller. Hopkins reprises his Oscar-winning role as the Lecter character in a way that humanized the personification of true evil. Moore shines as a washed up Starling, and Oldman puts on a true break-out performance in an uncredited role as Mason Verger.
Bottom line: Hannibal doesn't even compare to Silence because of the tone and themes of this film, not to mention the run-time of two hours and eleven minutes. This film could have had half an hour cut from it and then it would have been a thriller that would even make Hitchcock give respect to.
A pleasant and appropriate ending to the series that makes it a must for Lecter fans. Just one word of warning: stay away from Hannibal Rising.
