Review of Hannibal (2001) by Eytan D — 19 Jan 2015
Despite having a decent mystery to it, "Hannibal" is nowhere near as good as it should be. In "The Silence of the Lambs", the interaction between Clarice Starling and Hannibal Lecter was one of the most crucial and thrilling aspects of the film.
That is gone here until the end, and it's fairly disappointing. Julianne Moore, as terrific as she is in everything she does, is no Jodie Foster. Anthony Hopkins is still great in his Oscar-winning portrayal, but David Mamet and Steven Zaillian's script makes one fatal mistake: it removes the understanding and credibility of Hannibal Lecter and makes him into a caricature, not a character.
He becomes a monster, which "The Silence of the Lambs" avoided skillfully. Well-made and gruesome, but it falls short.
