Review of Hannah Gadsby: Nanette (2018) by Jeanie P — 18 Jun 2018
Do yourself a favor and check out Hannah Gadsby's standup on Netflix. It's standup comedy but it's not. It's funny and then it's informative and then shocking and heartbreaking and funny again.
The first 20 mins or so feels like a traditional standup routine. But then the gears start to masterfully shift and she eventually brings you back to some of those stories, revealing more of how they played out in real life, over the long term, and how they affected her as a person and not just a punchline. She covers topics from life as a lesbian, to gender norms, to art history, to self-hatered, to the structure of a good joke. I've never seen anything like it and I doubt I ever will again. My perspective on life has shifted a bit just listening to her stories. It will take you out of your comfort zone, but in the best way.
