Review of Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) by Sabra E — 29 Dec 2010
It's no wonder why Michael Caine won a Best Supporting Oscar for his role as rock-star manager Elliot. He was a total creeper as Hannah's husband, on the prowl for her sister, Lee.
I found myself at various times saying: Ugh, what a dirty, nasty man, while watching his lustful anxiety grow. I even found myself feeling sorry for her duped partner Frederick, played by the great Max Von Sydow, as well as pitying Hannah, though I despised Dianne Wiest's mooch character: Holly; and don't you know, she won an Oscar for her role, too. I guess in 1986, despicable/slightly lovable supporting characters in movies won Oscars. But I can't say they didn't deserve them. Hannah and Her Sisters is a pretty compelling movie.
