I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. This might be the strongest emotional reaction I've ever gotten out of a Woody Allen film, and I think it is the result of the myriad of stories.

No matter how complicated the character relationships get, and no matter how much the characters bicker and whine about their sensitivities, the themes evolve and progress naturally. Everyone is learning something vital about their lives in a very believable way.

This is in part because of the performances. Barbara Hershley, Michael Caine, Dianne Wiest, Mia Farrow, and even Woody Allen (despite doing practically the same thing he does in every movie) are mesmerizing.

The visuals are simple and clearly attempt to not be a distraction. Many scenes are one slow dolly shot long, but they don't draw attention to themselves. Woody Allen has always been one of those "actor's directors," and it shows here.
