Review of Hanna (2011) by Max E — 21 Mar 2012
Perhaps over-hyped, Hanna is certainly interesting, romantic, creepy and catchy. It's just a shame that Blanchett was cast; have yet to find a film I find her good in.
There aren't many good things that stand out here, but the story's fairly interesting, especially its introduction. All the performances were good, except Blanchett of course who still seems to bring ridicule to any scene. I enjoyed the blend of cultures that Hanna experienced, though found it a shame it was merely an example of what she was missing, and didn't play a more prominent role in the story. In a way, I felt that it was a commentary on Western Europeans and Americans, meant to relate to her character, we too could be called isolated from much of the beauty in the world. Particularly eerie performance by Tom Hollander, coupled with the dreamy music, helped bring forth the off-beat feel of the film even more.
One could almost call this a cross between My Summer of Love and Resident Evil. Overall, not bad, but not memorable; its lack of energy and perhaps cruelty paint an easier-than-necessary environment for this girl to survive in, and you may find yourself easily distracted from the film.
