Review of Hanna (2011) by Holly B — 08 Apr 2012
Young, sweet, innocent and deadly. That's Hanna. Saoirse Ronan plays the protagonist of this movie, a young mysterious girl with a hidden past. Hanna is directed by Joe Wright (whose work we've seen before in Atonement and Pride & Prejudice), and he continues to deliver with this movie.
The acting in the film is excellent, with Cate Blanchett giving us the chills as the mean, lonely and unscrupulous Marissa Wiegler. We also get to admire a world-class rising star in the shape of Saoirse Ronan, who fits this role perfectly.
Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) is an absolute assassin. She is strong and fast, having been raised in the Finnish wilderness by her father (Eric Bana), a former CIA agent. He then sends her on a mission to find and kill CIA agent Marissa Wiegler, who killed his wife (and Hanna's mother) when Hanna was a baby. To this end, Hanna arranges to get herself caught somewhere near the North Pole, from where she is then transported to Morocco. Escaping custody, and in search of Wiegler, Hanna secretly moves across Europe, escaping agents sent against her by Wiegler. During her mission, she comes to discover the truth about herself.
Hanna is a thriller with a lot of action within it, but this is not a typical Hollywood escapade. The story takes place in Europe, and this is the most positive aspect of the whole movie. After a few minutes â" some question may arise: Who is Hanna? Why is she so strong and why has her father made a killing machine out of her? The story of Hanna is really interesting and once we have started, we have to finish! However is not a cryptic movie, such as Inception.
Another positive trait of the film is Hanna's multi-lingualism. In the movie we can see her speaking German, Italian, Spanish and even Arabic. Many thanks to the script writers who have recognised that we live in a multi-lingual world!
At first glance the movie has everything a movie should have. A great director, an awesome cast, fantastic locations, however, there is something disturbing in the movie â" the soundtrack. Although composed by one of the most recognizable duos in the electronic music scene, The Chemical Brothers, there are some scenes in the movie where the music is completely misplaced. Perhaps this is just me, I'm not a huge fan of this type of music. That said, in Hanna we find almost everything, espionage, thriller, science fiction and even elements of a family drama. Unfortunately I must mention that this movie wonâ(TM)t satisfy everybody. On the other hand it starts a new generation in the cinema. A generation of gentle, pretty and innocent killers in the body of teenager.
