Review of Hanna (2011) by Movie R — 14 Apr 2012
I absolutley loved this film. Joe Wright's direction was very Tarintino esque, yet it was not as over the top and the point of the movie was not to pay homage to any type of film or film type like many of Tarintino's work.
Instead it is just a style that works for this film and helped tell the story of Hanna in the best way possible. I was so fully consumed by this production that 90% of the film I didn't take my eyes off the television not wanting to miss any of the beautiful shots and the curiously beautiful cinimetography that was unlike anything Ive seen.
Like I said earlier there are many things involving the direction and cinimetography that resembles a Tarintino film but the other aspects of "Hanna" were oftentimes more solid, such as the writing, there was not as much focus on dialougue as a movie such as "Pulp Fiction" or "Kill Bill" instead Wright lets the film speak for itself, that's done partly with the camera work but alot of the shine comes from the great young actress Saoirse Ronan and of course Eric Bana who has grown as an actor so much over the past few years and he has been taking roles that really fit his acting.
I found the plot to be very fleshed out and the climax was great, the cat and mouse game that was going on throughout the film was amazing because you never really knew who was the cat, and who was the mouse.
They switch roles many times throughout the film. Choreographed beautifully, the fighting and action scenes are remniscent of a broadway musical thats tugging at your senses with all it's strength.
With a somewhat thin backstory to work with the film made it work and it had the "X Factor" that really makes you feel something, from the opening shots in the northern snowy woods Hanna kills the Elk and intimately puts it out of it's misery, that also happens to be the closing shot, putting a creature out of it's misery, a hunt long awaited finally finished.
Amazing metaphor there and an amazing film altogether, I was surprised "Hanna" didn't garner any oscar worthiness at all, not even talk of it which is a shame because the performances and direction was top notch.
A must see, this film will make you feel every scene.
