Review of Hanna (2011) by Joshua B — 16 Dec 2012
Hanna is an unapologetically stylish action movie from director Joe Wright, his follow up to the fantastic Atonement, and it is at once completely unlike the period dramas Wright made before it and distinctly marked by the director's unique hand.
From its jarring, quirky electro-score by the Chemical Brothers to the heavy debt it owes to dark fairy tales, the film pulsates with gonzo energy. It's an energy that ultimately may turn off viewers accustomed to a specific action formula, but what Wright has crafted here, in part thanks to the wonderful lead performance by Saoirse Ronan (whom Wright previously worked with in Atonement), is not a typical action thriller but a darkly comedic bildungsroman with an action movie premise.
It's a really fun film.
