Review of Hanging Up (2000) by Lucia S — 14 May 2009
While there are some moments that do strike a true emotional cord and some funny one-liners, the vast majority of this film is, as the AV Club put it, obnoxiously shallow. The film progresses as a proof less than a script, with each of the characters never transcending the stereotypes they are filling in the film.
There are elements of the plot throughout (the doctor and his mother) for one that really aren't necessary. The script is largely disorganized between Matthau's changes in condition, rambling until the inevitable death and happy ending.
Generic is perhaps the best word for it.
