Review of Hands of Stone (2016) by Greg B — 26 Aug 2016
"Hands of Stone" is a boxing film that chronicles the life of boxer Roberto Duran who grew up in Panama in the early 1960's. He is slated to fight Sugar Ray Leonard, which will put him on the map.
This film was a cluttered mess. The narrative is stilted, the pacing is uneven, and it's hard to latch onto these characters. Aside from a solid performance by Robert De Niro, the film is a generic, formulaic boxing movie that does absolutely nothing different than any other middle of the road underdog story.
By the time we reach the climax we want the film to be over because the director never fully pulls us in. There is a problem if I don't care about the characters or their plights. The film is full of pointless sex rather than developing the characters and is extremely selective with body types --------------------------------------------------- C.
