Review of Hancock (2008) by Matt R — 17 Jun 2012
Coming into this movie, I really had no idea what to expect. During the course of the movie, I went from being intrigued, to excited and entertained, to annoyed, to confused, and finally to just plain dumbfounded.
This movie had all the makings of a potential blockbuster in the first hour, but then took a turn for the worst. It was like watching two different movies in the same sitting. It goes from being about a rebellious superhero earning redemption and becoming beloved by the people of Los Angeles, to all of a sudden becoming about two demigods who become mortal when they are around one another.
While I'm usually all for a plot twist, this movie makes such a drastic turn that it is almost impossible to notice any resemblance from the first half to the second. If Peter Berg had decided to break these two storylines into separate films, they both would have made perfect sense, but when put together, the movie's plot has more holes in it than swiss cheese.
While the average viewer will appreciate the impressive graphics and unique characters, the confusing storyline leaves a lot to be desired.
