Review of Hancock (2008) by Jesse M — 28 May 2014
A fun premise that was going well with satiric flare succombs to a drastic change in tone and direction in the second half that derails the winning appeal set up in the first half. The plot developments were unnecessary and hindered where it should have helped the story.
It was as if the filmmakers lost their nerve halfway and decided to throw in a heavy handed plot twist and a half baked villain subplot to give it some sort of self importance. In the end it convoluted the story to the point of being aimless and unfocused. The point is lost along the way.
Overall it still delivers big cgi action summer spectacle, and Will Smith is enjoyable in it. Recommended barely for the superior and funny first half.... If only they just stuck to their guns.
