Review of Hancock (1991) by Jordan R — 26 Dec 2012
The idea of a drunken scandalous powerful man needs more exploit in Hancock. But never the less, the concept is very underrated; this concept has never been seen before, so how can we say if it is not enough exploted or correctly executed, if it is the first time we see something like Hancock? And there's the thing; Hancock is another enterely new way to see a superhero, he's drunk, the people hate him, but never the less they need him.
Ok, that's similar to Spider-Man or Batman but this one does not have a dilemma to keep going, neither to retire, and so there goes, he doesn't have an identity to hide from everyone. He doesn't even remember why he is like how he is, he just do what he wants.
And in the not enough exploted department, here's my comment: this is how Hancock transforms from a drunken mother-of-ass to a respetable superhero, loved by everybody. So, the movie doesn't go anywere from there, because that's the point.
That's what we are supossed to see here, not mind-less fights or destruction, here we see how Hancock, a guy with incredible powers becomes something he never think he could be, helped by a loser (played by Jason Bateman) who's life is very average, suddently changes when Hancock saves his life, and so, he wants to return the favor, by transforming him into a lovely superhero.
And that is just ass, I mean, this guy can slap you and you'll be dead, but he was smart enough to see in Hancock not a destroyer, but a hurted man, full of questions without answers, that deep inisde wants to change, but just can't.
So this is my reason why Hancock is overrated; it's a new concept and we can't see a way to fully appreciate it. In the other hand, another reason to watch it is Will Smith in the main role, some amazing Special Effects and a suitable score by John Powell, as well as the satisfaction of this movie as a hall.
It has notable flaws, but why bother on that when the rest is well done? Think about it.
