Review of Hammer of the Gods (2013) by Alex B — 01 Jun 2013
The lead Steinar (Charlie Bewley) spends the entire film combating the idiotic mentality that "dark times call for dark deeds". His response is that dark times call for reason, logic and "light", and he adamantly defends this position, going so far as to kill his best friend, brother and mother in opposition to their superstition and brutality.
The film ends with the lead protagonist being the sole surviving cast member from the beginning of the film, having fully abandoned the ideology he spent the entire film championing, even though the events of the film have only validated his perspective again and again.
Well shot with surprisingly competent performances given the limitations of the script, it comes off as callous and heartless. If all you want is several hours of meaningless violence and an atheist being so preachy as to annoy atheists, this film is for you.
Otherwise, just go watch the Clive Owen Arthur.
