Review of Hamlet 2 (2008) by Marya V — 25 Dec 2009
Very much a hit or miss comedy that tries to parody inspirational teacher movies such as âDangerous Mindsâ?; a good movie to have in the background while you are doing something else.
Steve Coogan actually starts the film by explaining to other characters that the movie is meant to be a parody of the teacher-movie subgenre (thanks, I wouldnât have gotten that on my own).
He then proceeds to throw a flurry of often offensive jokes against the celluloid to see what will stick â most of them donât. For some reason Coogan uses Tucson, Arizona as the butt of many of the jokes (âthe good thing about coming from Tucson is that everywhere seems coolâ?).
Iâm not sure if Tucson is as awful as he portrays and Iâm not sure the rest of the audience would either which sort of limits the funny. He uses his failed actor character as the butt of most of the jokes portraying him as such a loser that no empathy is built and we really donât care when he eventually succeeds in pulling together his sequel to Shakespeareâs Hamlet.
