Review of Hamlet 2 (2008) by Richard G — 27 May 2009
An awkward hybrid between an uncomfortable-to-watch British comedy in the tradition of The Office (the Ricky Gervais version) and an inspiring-teacher Hollywood film in the tradition of (insert name of any of 1,000 movies here.) It's like Hollywood was willing to take a little bit of a chance and put Coogan, a master of the awkward-protagonist genre, in the lead, but not let him go all the way and (spoiler alert) fail to inspire his kids and put on a lousy show.
This, I think, is why my friend Amy can't make up her mind about the movie - it's two movies soldered together.
Amy Poehler is hilarious in a bit part as an ACLU lawyer. Otherwise, meh.
Sorry Mel.
