Review of Hamlet 2 (2008) by Patrick C — 31 Jul 2009
While some of the bit characters aren't great and seem kind of just there because they need to be to continue parts of the story and some parts seem like they linger a bit longer than necessary, this is a great comedy.
If you're familiar with Steve Coogan you should know more or less what you're getting into (and that's a good thing!) because its a whole movie focused on his comedic talent and delivery. This kind of quasi-inspiring character, driven beyond all real sense, despite taking terrible blows in their lives (Coogan's character reminds me of Michael Scott of the American version of The Office) seems to me to be catching on, oddly enough, and it makes me think of the tons of similar characters in manga.
Characters that are pure drive, fighting against everything they know to be true despite their failings. Springtime of youth? This movie also comes off as a weird sort of overtly obvious spoof of such inspiring teacher movies (even going so far as referencing a few of them).
Hey, and how can you not enjoy a movie with a musical number called "Rock Me Sexy Jesus"?
