Review of Hamlet 2 (2008) by James R — 17 Oct 2009
Switch on film. Switch off brain. Enjoy. One of those films but no less enjoyable for that fact. Coogan does an excellent job of creating a pathetic drama teacher, caught in his own repressive stagnant hell hole.
This film follows the creation of 'Hamlet 2' - which Coogan's character writes as the rest of his life falls down around his ears. There are some funny, well observed moments that are genuine laugh outloud moments; but the real humour is found in the last twenty minutes of the film, during the production of Hamlet two.
Songs like 'Rock me sexy Jesus' are actually quite toe tappingly amusing and had me laughing quite a lot. I don't remember this film coming out at the cinema, it may have even gone straight to DVD.
It certainly won't win any awards for scripting, idea or impact; but for a little over an hour and a half of your life it's pretty good on the giggleometer.
