Review of Hamlet 2 (2008) by Mitch W — 24 Jul 2011
Being the only person to attend the particular screening I went to (4:40 on a Wednesday), I had the opportunity to unequivocally emote exactly how the movie made me feel and not feel constrained by other viewers. Unfortunately, there was hardly anything that produced any of that stuff.
The movie is more about the production of the eponymous in-movie play and the tribulations encountered along the way. So don't be deterred by thinking it's just a musical that says Jesus is sexy (That's only for the last 10 minutes or so).
As the lone viewer, I only had a handful of chuckles come out of me. As a comedy, it wasn't that funny. The acting is good by everyone except for Coogan, who plays the lead character. Granted, I saw glimpses of his portrayals in my own high school drama class teacher, but it was too much and detracted from the rest of the film.
The main reason I went to see this was because I live in Tucson, Arizona. While I figured they would portray it as a hellhole (which, to some people, it is) I felt no connection at all. They could've just made up a generic city with too many Southwestern references and it would have been just as ineffective.
If you stay through the credits, the second song comes out of nowhere. Actually, just leave the theater as soon as you can.
Actually, just don't bother seeing it.
