Review of Hamlet 2 (2008) by Matthew B — 15 Jul 2014
It has a slow uptake; the first 1/3 of the movie you could skip, and still experience most of the funny / good parts, as much of it is just building up Steve Coogan's character Dana.
The comedic bits before the end (where the play is) weren't exactly "laugh out loud", aside from a few notable exceptions (Dana being slipped acid, Dana kicking a garbage can and it hitting a student in the head... that's about it) here and there. The real 'funny' comes at the end during the play, as it just murders any sort of seriousness that the plays / movies / stories that the play 'Hamlet 2' is based on, and instead just telling their own story regardless of who it offends or turns off.
The play itself was kind cool; either Hamlet or Jesus (I couldn't tell which) go through time and experience random stories that have happened, only with their characters alongside the ones that were original part of the original stories. The funniest part was the "Rock Me Sexy Jesus" bit, and probably the only part I'll remember of the movie. Yes, a lot of the movie is forgettable.
My favourite character was probably Amy Poehler's, as she just went as absurdly as possible with her performance, which stood out from the rest of the movie. Steve Coogan's Dana was a good character, too, with none of the other characters doing much of anything notable. Dana was at his funniest when he was having horrible things happen to him, or was unintentionally doing horrible things, and of course the play.
That's about it though. I wouldn't really recommend it to anybody as it's not exceptional in any aspect...
(Holy crap I thought that Gary was David Arquette, but I couldn't tell because his faced thinned out, and doesn't look or sound like him :S.).
