Review of Hamlet (1996) by John D — 12 Dec 2007
I think with Hamlet more than any other of Shakespeare's plays you're more likely to umm and ahh at all the bits that you think could have been done better. Yet Branagh's rendition, and indeed his overall vision for the play ain't too bad: the 19th century setting works wonderfully, and there are little touches here and there that I got far too excited about! A little self-indulgent at times, and some of the performances are a little weak, but overall a smashing Shakespeare adaptation that actually manages to justify its existence as a film.
