Review of Hamlet (1996) by Scott H — 25 Apr 2008
The positives: Branagh and the core Shakespearean actors are brilliant, Julie Christie is Gertrude, baby, and Heston is the First Player. And, YOU GET THE WHOLE PLAY. But...Jack Lemmon as Marcellus? Other cameos suck ,too.
And, really, should "Hamlet" require an army of stuntmen? Worth it for ALL of the dialog, including the jibes the Bard took at his competitors. Go see how much a groundling got for his ha'pence.
Gibson's version is second best, and with Olivier, you get 2/3 of the play. Best of a not-great bunch.
