Review of Hamlet (1996) by Paul B — 27 Dec 2009
There is arguably no-one better to make the definitive Shakespeare into a film. And Branagh nails it in the only way possible, to film the whole 4 hour play. In spite of some Hollywood cameo's (Crystal, Williams and Lemmon the biggest spare parts.
..) this is a tour de force and Branagh is superb in the lead role supported with a determined and forceful turn from Derek Jacobi. On top of these headline performances there is all round great production, top notch supporting performances from the greats of British theatre, geniune tension, an exciting all-action climax and the original unadulterated text.
A triumph.
