Review of Hamburger Hill (1987) by George W — 21 Mar 2010
There are two Vietnam films worth watching, Apocalypse Now and Go tell the Spartans. Hamburger Hill came close to making it three.
It cant decide whether its a "Rites of Passage" or "Futility of War" flick and falls between these two stools. Too many scenes just fizzle out, if in doubt cut to montage and 60's sound track,,,,.
It needed a tighter hand on the reigns. The action set pieces are well done, but the inter personal sequences are let down by too many speeches. Soldiers dont waste words, they have shorthand phrases that cover everything. They understand that at the sharp end everybody has the same basic experience. With a tighter edit this could have been such a good film,,,.
